A learning management system often called an LMS for short, is a software application or web-based technology used to plan, administer and evaluate a specific learning process. In other words, a learning management system basically provides an instructor with the tools to create and deliver content, monitor student participation and assess student performance. Apart from its significant use in educational institutions, it is also used by business organizations to create training programs for employees.

Earlier this year, our team of tech enthusiasts created multiple surveys to determine the best LMS software applications; according to quality user-experience, security and flexible design tools. After analyzing responses from our surveys, this is what we came up with.

Moodle

Moodle™ (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is the most widely used free open-source learning management system in the world today. Moodle™ LMS serves hundreds of millions of educators as well as learning and development professionals, to create and deliver online learning. The best part about Moodle™ LMS is that it follows the constructivist social pedagogical principle which says that “people actively construct new knowledge as they interact with their environments”.

Edmodo

Edmodo is a cloud-based LMS that allows for collaborative learning through content sharing, communication tools, and classroom management. Instructors are able to create quizzes, assignments, and other learning activities which simulate a real classroom experience. According to multiple reviews, Edmodo has a conveniently short learning curve, and the social learning options are (pleasantly) reminiscent of a social media network.

Blackboard

The Blackboard Learning Management System currently known as Blackboard Learn is a web-based virtual learning environment and learning management system developed by Blackboard Inc. The software features course management, customizable open architecture, and scalable design that allows integration with student information systems and authentication protocols.
